What is a BCWAV file?
A BCWAV file is an audio file used by a Nintendo 3DS video game. It is saved in a proprietary version of the .WAV format, used only by 3DS games. However, modders have created utilities that allow them to play and convert the audio that BCWAV files contain.
More Information
Binary CTR Wave, or BCWAV, files contain sound effects or music played in a Nintendo 3DS video game. For example, the game Fire Emblem Fates contains many BCWAV files used to play in-game sounds.
BCWAV files are stored in .BCSAR audio archives, located in a 3DS cartridge's romfs/sound directory. While most gamers will never encounter a game's BCWAV files, 3DS modders regularly extract, modify, play, and replace BCWAV files, to customize 3DS games.
How to open a BCWAV file
You can open a BCWAV file and play the audio it contains with Foobar2000 (Windows), after installing the vgmstream plug-in.
How to convert a BCWAV file
You can use Foobar2000 with the vgmstream plug-in installed to convert BCWAV files to .WAV and other common audio formats.
Also, you can use BCFSTM-BCFWAV-Converter (Windows) to convert BCWAV files to some other proprietary Nintendo audio formats, including .BCSTM, .BFSTM, BFSTP, and .BFWAV.
How to convert a WAV or OGG file to a BCWAV file
You can use cwavtool (multiplatform) to convert WAV and OGG audio files to the BCWAV format, for use in modded 3DS games.
