The editor provides configurable syntax highlighting for a variety of languages such as C++, Java, XML, HTML, Python, and Perl. gedit also comes with search and replace, text wrapping, bracket matching, current line highlighting, and configurable font and color functionality. If you need to add any new functionality, the editor supports plugins, as well.
