What is a VMXF file?
A VMXF file is a configuration file for virtual machines (VMs) created with VMware virtualization software. It contains team member data for VMs created in a team group environment, a setup that allows administrators to control multiple VMs together manually. VMXF files are saved in a plain text format with XML formatting.
More Information
VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation are operating system virtualization applications that enable you to run multiple VMs on a single machine. Teams is a capability primarily used in VMware Workstation, allowing administrators to group VMs for streamlined management. VMware software creates VMXF files to supplement the primary .VMX configuration files.
Even if your VM is not part of a team, it still includes a VMXF file. Additionally, if your VM is part of a team but is removed, it will still retain the VMXF file.
Location of VMXF files
When creating a VM, the VMware software creates a VMXF file in the VM file. For example, Fusion saves the VMXF file in the .VMWAREVM file, which you can find in the following location (Fusion saves it here by default):
Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Virtual Machines
How to open a VMXF file
You should not attempt to open a VMXF file manually. Instead, the VMware Fusion or VMware Workstation apps reference the VMXF file when loading the VM.
