What is a VAL file?

A VAL file is a dictionary of words used by valodas, a discontinued language-learning program. It stores words (including their pronunciation) related to a specific language (e.g., English, Spanish, French, etc.) and their associated definitions. valodas users can edit the VAL dictionary file to add and update words and their meanings.

A VAL file may also be an audio file exported from older Olympus voice recorder models. It stores a voice recording, typically from interviews, such as a reporter interviewing an eyewitness or a family member preserving oral history from a grandparent. Only Olympus DSS Player Lite supports VAL files; unfortunately, Olympus no longer develops the program.

More Information

The VAL file type was common among Olympus voice recorder users in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After recording their audio, users connect the recorder to their computer, export it to their computer, and play it with Olympus software packaged with their voice recorder purchase. However, Olympus dropped the proprietary audio format for more common file types, such as .WAV and .MP3, making the VAL file type obscure.

How to open a VAL file

You can only open VAL files with Olympus DSS Player Lite in Windows. Unfortunately, Olympus no longer develops the playback software.

A VAL file may also be a database object containing a list of values used by earlier versions of dBASE and dBASE Plus database management systems. It stores commonly used values that one or more databases may reference. For example, if multiple databases use the same set of numbers or dates, a VAL file can store that set of numbers or dates, which the databases reference.

More Information

dBASE is a database management application that also provides an IDE, compiler, and syntax editor. The software succeeded dBASE Plus (starting with version 12), which also provides database management capabilities. Both programs support the use of Values List (VAL) files.

NOTE: dBASE stands for "dataBased Intelligence."

How to open a VAL file

You can open VAL files with dBASE and dBASE Plus in Windows.
