What is a TAX20 file?
A TAX20 file is a tax return created by the desktop version of Intuit TurboTax 2020, a U.S. tax preparation and filing application. It stores personal information entered by the user, a 2020 federal IRS tax form, and one or more 2020 state tax forms. TAX20 files are the same as the more common .TAX2020 files, but are instead saved with the .tax20 file extension.
More Information
TurboTax is available as a downloadable desktop version for Windows and macOS, and as a web version called TurboTax Online. The software comes in several editions (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business) with each edition providing different features at different prices.
NOTE: TAX20 files are uncommon since the desktop version of TurboTax saves tax returns as TAX2020 files by default when a user selects select File → Save....
How to open a TAX20 file
You can open a TAX20 file with the desktop version of Intuit TurboTax (2020 or later), which is available for both Windows and macOS. To open a TAX20 file with TurboTax, select File → Open Tax Return.
You can also upload a TAX20 file to Intuit TurboTax Online when uploading your tax data from the previous year. For example, you can upload a TAX20 file to TurboTax Online when filing your taxes for the 2021 calendar year, but not the 2020 year. To open a TAX20 file with TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools → Tools, click "Transfer last year's TurboTax return from your computer," then follow the prompts to upload the file.
