What is an SPJ file?

An SPJ file is a project file created by NCH PhotoStage slideshow software. It contains a sequenced multimedia presentation that may include text, shapes, pictures, video clips, music, narration, effects, and transitions. SPJ files store references to imported media files, such as audio, video, and images, but it does not store the files themselves.

More Information

PhotoStage SPJ project files are only supported by PhotoStage software, which is used for creating personal slideshows and sharing them with family and friends. You can open SPJ projects in PhotoStage by selecting File → Open.

If you want to share a project with someone who does not own PhotoStage, you can burn the project to a DVD, upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, or Flick, or export it in another file format. Some multimedia formats you can export the project to include .MP4, .MOV, and .AVI.

If you are moving an SPJ project to another computer or backing it up, you need to also copy the actual media files imported to the project since they are referenced in the project. If you select File → Back Up Project Files To Folder..., you can copy all the referenced files to a single location for backup or transfer.

An SPJ file may also be a project file created by Saturn, a fan-made machinima studio for Super Mario 64. It contains a record of the project's included frames, 3D models, camera angles, scale information, and other data. Saturn autosaves users' projects as SPJ files, and users can manually save their projects as SPJ files.

More Information

Machinima is the practice of using video game graphics engines to create movies. Saturn is a machinima studio that is overlaid upon an open-source PC port of Super Mario 64, a video game for the Nintendo 64. With Saturn, users can create animated movies within Super Mario 64, using the game's graphics engine and default assets, as well as custom assets (such as custom 3D models).

Saturn saves users' machinima projects as SPJ files. Often, users save multiple SPJ files for the same project, so they can reload prior instances of the project if necessary.

How to open an SPJ file

You can open an SPJ file with Saturn. While Saturn is technically available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, the macOS version is untested.
