What is an RTP file?

An RTP file is a molecular data file used by Gromacs, a program used for simulating molecular dynamics. It saves residue information, which represents the base parts of a molecule and may contain atoms, bonds, angles, dihedrals, and impropers. RTP files are used as a data file for molecular analysis.

More Information

RTP files are used by pdb2gmx, a Gromacs program used for converting Protein Data Bank (.PDB) files into Gromacs topologies (.TOP files).

NOTE: Gromacs stands for Groningen Machine for Chemical Simulations.

An RTP file may also be an update file used by earlier desktop versions of Intuit TurboTax, a tax preparation service. It contains data for improving or modifying the program, such as new features, bug fixes, or changes to tax laws. While TurboTax no longer uses RTP files, users of earlier software versions would install the latest updates to the program delivered via an RTP file without needing to download an entirely new version of TurboTax.

More Information

To ensure that the software stayed compliant with the latest tax regulations, earlier versions of TurboTax continually released updates to the desktop version of the software. The software downloaded the files automatically and applied them to the existing software installation to streamline the update process. However, users sometimes encountered RTP files when they initiated software updates or when TurboTax automatically updated itself.

NOTE: TurboTax no longer supports RTP files.

How to open an RTP file

Only earlier versions of Intuit TurboTax support RTP files. No other known program can open RTP update files.
