What is an NKSN file?
An NKSN file is a snapshot of a Kontakt instrument (.NKI file) used by Kontakt Player, a free sample player based on Kontakt. It contains the state of an instrument in the Kontakt Snapshot (NKSN) format, functioning similarly to instrument presets. Kontakt Player users can save snapshots of instruments as NKSN files to reuse them across different projects or computers.
More Information
Kontakt Player is an alternative to the fuller-featured Kontakt software and hosts and runs Native Instruments’ sample-based instruments. As you modify instruments in the application, you can save your changes as NKSN files (click the floppy disk Save icon).
The software saves NKSN files storing user snapshots in the following location by default:
- Windows - C:\Users\[username]\My Documents\Native Instruments\User Content\Kontakt Factory Library\
- macOS - Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Documents/Native Instruments/User Content/Kontakt Factory Library/
How to open an NKSN file
You can open NKSN files with Kontakt Player in Windows and macOS. To open an NKSN file with Kontakt Player:
- Open the Snapshot view by clicking the Snapshot View (camera icon).
- Select the arrow icon next to the Snapshot name field.
- Choose the User category.
- Select the NKSN snapshot you want to open.
You can also drag and drop an NKSN file onto an active Instrument in the Rack in Kontakt Player to open it.
