What is an ENS file?
Output formatting file used by EndNote, a program used for managing citations; stores a bibliographic style that can be used to format citations according to different standards; may include indentation, punctuation, textual syntax, alphabetization, and other rules.
More Information
EndNote styles are used to generate EndNote libraries (.ENL files) into syntactically-correct bibliographies that conform to a published standard.
ENS files are often provided online by organizations that maintain bibliographic formatting standards. Custom styles may also be created by EndNote users.
NOTE: Clarivate EndNote was previously developed by Thomson Reuters.

An ENS file may also be a project file created by NaturalMotion endorphin, a program used to create 3D animated characters and scenes. It contains a scene that can be opened and edited in endorphin. The scene likely consists of several animated characters moving within a realistic 3D environment.
More Information
Endorphin was a powerful 3D animation tool available for Windows. It allowed video game developers, visual artists, and others to create, render, and play realistic 3D animations. These animations were often comprised of many independent characters and objects, which interacted with each other using adaptive behaviors (prompted by specified trigger conditions) and lifelike physics.
Each endorphin animation project, referred to as an endorphin scene, was saved as an ENS file. After a user finished creating a scene in endorphin, they could export the scene in a format used by other animation software (for further editing and easier incorporation into a game development project), or they could export a video of their scene in the .AVI format.
NOTE: The Learning Edition of endorphin saved scenes as ELS files, rather than ENS files. These file types are interchangeable, so you can use Learning Edition scenes with the standard version of endorphin by renaming them to use the .ens extension (and vice-versa).
How to open an ENS file
You can open an ENS file with NaturalMotion endorphin (Windows). However, because endorphin was discontinued in 2014 and is no longer maintained, you may have trouble running it on your PC. If you are unable to run endorphin, you will not be able to open your ENS file.
